Sometimes when I’m hanging out with friends, or just doing whatever, taking a walk, anything, I remember that I’m a photographer. I remember that I have a camera that I can whip out and start snapping away with whenever I so choose. It’s a nice feeling being able to document life, whether it be yours or another’s - it gives you an unexpected feeling of importance, like you do matter in some small way because you’re creating visual memories to last lifetimes. I don’t know about you, but I personally have a very hard time remembering things (my self-description often includes ‘has the memory of a goldfish’, which may be partly in jest and a hyperbole, but the foundation sadly lies in truth). So taking pictures is my method of remembering, as it is for so many others. I’ve had people complain about this aspect of my personality before, that I’ve always got the camera around my neck and I’m constantly posting pictures, but here’s my justification for you.
Have you ever realized how much easier you can recall bad memories or experiences? Or, at least, you can remember more bad things than good things if someone asks you on the spot? Maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s only a few of us, but I honestly find it hard to remember the little things in life that have made me happy unless I have that visual reminder. Don’t know why that is, but it’s just the reality I deal with, and I deal by taking pictures.
